Penang DCM must resign? This is what Chief Minister has to say
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has dismissed calls by Pas that has been demanding for the resignation of deputy chief minister Mohamad Abdul Hamid over allegations of zakat funds abuse for the purchase of a land by a senior state government official.
He said that the issue was already addressed by Mohamad during the state assembly sitting in November.
“This is the kind of thing politicians usually say,” Chow told the media who asked about Pas’ demand.
Chow pointed out the assemblyman who raised the issue accepted the explanation on how the funds was used based on the assessments of relevant departments.
He also confirmed that the Malaysia Anti Corruption Commission has begun probing the matter and the state government would not interfere in the matter.
“Let MACC investigate. We practise administration based on the rule of law. There is a judicial system (to handle wrongdoings),” he said.
When asked again whether Mohamad needed to resign, Chow replied, “At this stage, there is no need. If that were the case, people in Malaysia would be resigning every day.”
Investigators from the anti-graft agency have visited several offices to obtain documents and recorded statements from a few individuals, with more expected to be called in for questioning.
The Penang Islamic Religious Council said it is cooperating with investigators and has rejected claims circulating online about the land acquisition.
Mohamad meanwhile has denied any wrongdoing.
Fawwaz Jan (PN-Permatang Pauh) who is also Penang Pas information chief wants Mohamad to resign from all positions related to the administration and leadership of Islamic religious institutions in the state.
