DAP reaffirms call for RCI on corporate mafia, MACC can’t just deny it

DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo has reaffirmed the party’s call in pushing for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to look into allegations that the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission is working with a corporate mafia, as alleged by international media house, Bloomberg.

Gobind who is also Digital Minister added that the MACC cannot be a judge when it is being accused.

“While the MACC has dismissed these claims as baseless and originating from an anonymous blog, and they have every right to do so, a mere denial on their part alone is insufficient.

“It is a fundamental principle of justice that no one should be a judge in their own case.

“When the integrity of our premier anti-graft agency is questioned, a self issued clearance does not measure up. It in itself, without more, does little to restore public or investor confidence.”

The MACC however dismissed the claims yesterday.

The call for a RCI was made by the DAP secretary general Anthony Loke Siew Fook on Tuesday.

The Bloomberg report exposed two damaging issues regarding the MACC.

One, was that its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki having shares above than the allowed figure.

Two, the MACC was working had in gloves with certain companies which act like Mafia to enable companies being taken over.

The report claimed that MACC used various pressure methods so that that the target sell off their stakes.

Gobind pointed out that it is vital for the RCI to conduct a transparent inquiry on a matter concerning the integrity of an enforcement agency.

“What is required is an impartial and transparent inquiry. The allegations in question are specific. They name individuals, companies and reference identifiable cases.

“There is sufficient basis for an inquiry to commence and the best option would be for an RCI to be formed as it would be equipped with the necessary statutory powers to conduct a proper and meaningful inquiry into the matter.

“Whether the allegations are true or not, and what is to be done thereafter, is a matter for the RCI to decide.”
