Bring forward DAP special congress if proposed RCI rejected

DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng has suggested that the party bring forward its special congress slated for July 12 if the cabinet rejects the party’s proposal for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate allegations of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission colluding with a corporate mafia.

“If the cabinet does not accept it, the special congress planned for July might be brought forward; there is no need to wait until July 12.

“This is because our secretary-general (Anthony Loke) and chairperson (Gobind Singh Deo) also agree on the need for an RCI,” Lim reportedly told Kwong Wah Yit Poh in an interview published yesterday.

“The allegations of collusion are far more serious than the claims regarding MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s previous shareholdings, adding that the matter must be investigated thoroughly or the MACC would be seen as an oppressor.

“If (the government) continues to support Azam, the people will question the motive. What is the conspiracy? What exactly are they trying to cover up or hide? A clear explanation is needed,” the Bagan MP was quoted as saying.

Loke had said on Monday that the DAP will propose a RCI on the allegations during the cabinet meeting today. Gobind had backed the call since MACC cannot be the judge for its alleged wrongdoing.

A special congress on July 12 would allow DAP delegates to determine whether the party would remain or withdraw from the cabinet in the federal government.

This is part of DAP’s calls to accelerate reforms especially in the wake of the crushing defeat that the party suffered during Sabah state polls last year.
