Nothing has changed
MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said that the allocation for non-Bumiputeras in the matriculation program remains unchanged due to the quota system.
“The decision to admit Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students with 10 ‘A’s or more into matriculation programs simply reallocates seats from disadvantaged non-Bumiputera students to top-performing non-Bumiputera students, regardless of their family background,” he said in a video posted on his Facebook account.
“What is there to celebrate?” he questioned.
Wee also raised concerns about how the government plans to uphold the 90% Bumiputera and 10% non-Bumiputera quota in the matriculation program while safeguarding the interests of vulnerable groups.
“How can we ensure the interests of the vulnerable groups are protected while maintaining the 90% Bumiputera and 10% non-Bumiputera quota?” he asked.
“How should we implement Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement to admit SPM students with 10 ‘A’s or more into matriculation programs regardless of race and background?” Wee said.
“Moreover, why did the Cabinet only mention students with 10 ‘A’s when making this decision?” he queried.
Wee also pointed out that not all students take 10 subjects; many opt to take 9 subjects.
“Did the Education Ministry not present a list of students with straight As to the Cabinet?
“What about those who took only 9 subjects and achieved straight As?” he further questioned.
He urged the Education Ministry to provide clarity on these issues.
Anwar announced on June 30 that students scoring 10 ‘A’s or more in SPM will secure admission into the matriculation program, irrespective of their race or background.
