Bumi students increased, non-Bumi decreased in national schools

The number of Bumiputera students enrolled in national schools have increased from 93.81 percent to 95.12 percent in the last decade but the number of non Bumiputera students have decreased from 6.19 percent in 2014 to 4.88 percent in 2024, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

“In Chinese prime schools, there is an increase of Bumiputera students from 11.67 percent in 2014 to 18.53 percent in 2024.

“Non bumiputera students in Chinese schools have decreased from 88.33 percent to 81.48 percent in the past decade.” sje said.

Fadhlina was responding via written reply to Chow Yu Hui (PH-Raub) who asked for the statistics and percentage of students in Chinese and Tamil primary schools according to racial breakdown in the last two decades.

He also asked for the statistics and percentage of students studying in the national, vernacular and international schools by year and race in the last two decades.

“The bumiputera students enrolled in Tamil primary schools was 0.38 percent in 2014 and rose to 0.49 percent in 2024. The non bumiputera students remained around 99 percent in the last decade.”

As for international schools, it accepts both local and foreigners, and the total number enrolled are 88,951.

“A total of 59726 or 67.1 percent are citizens whereas there are 29,225 non -citizens, equivalent to 32.9 percent. Up to 19.9 percent are bumiputera.

“Enrolment of citizens into international schools have increased 34 percent from since 2019. Bumiputera students increased by 49.4 percent and non bumiputera by 30.6 percent.
