Law to ban social media from under 16 passed
In a historic first, Australia’s House of Representatives passed a bill that bans children under the age of 16 from social media.
The bill was passed with 102 ayes and 13 nays.
The bill makes it liable on social media platforms a fine of upto A$50,000,000.
That is equivalent to RM 144,337,701.
That is the amount social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Reddit, Snapchat, X have to fork out for systemic failures on their part to prevent young children from having social media accounts.
The platforms also are not allowed to compel users to provide their government issued identity documents and digital identification via a government system.
