Two day holiday for Deepavali in Penang?

Penang may likely provide a second public holiday in conjunction with Deepavali.

Deepavali has been a one day public holiday at the federal level in Peninsula Malaysia.

“I proposed that the state declared a state level holiday for Deepavali in the state legislative assembly.

“Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow promised that he would look into having a second day holiday for Deepavali,” said K Kumaran (PH-Bagan Dalam) to Harapan Daily.

The MIC and Senator Dr A Lingeshwaran had called for one extra day to be made public holiday in conjunction with Deepavali this year.

However the extra off day did not materialise this year.

On another matter, Kumaran who is also a Penang Hindu Endowment Board member confirmed that PHEB welcomed the idea of forming a united front involving individuals and organisations in view of the rising anti-Hindu content that has spread on social media.

“PHEB and the Hindu Sangam agreed to this. However PHEB has not discussed on the next move towards the proposal,” said Kumaran.
