Singapore bolsters security measures following fatal Johor police station attack
Following a fatal attack on a Ulu Tiram, Johor police station, security measures in Singapore, including checkpoints, were intensified on Saturday, May 18th.
“In view of the heightened threat situation, and that the Malaysian police are looking for several other JI (Jemaah Islamiyah) members, we had earlier today stepped up security measures, including at our checkpoints,” said Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a statement on Saturday night, reported CNA.
MHA revealed that to bolster security, Singapore authorities have ramped up patrols and implemented stricter screenings for travellers.
Consequently, delays are anticipated at checkpoints, prompting the MHA to recommend that travellers factor in additional time for immigration clearance.
On Saturday, MHA announced that the Singapore Internal Security Department (ISD) had been coordinating with Malaysian authorities regarding the attack.
MHA urged individuals to promptly contact ISD at 1800-2626-473 if they notice signs of radicalization in someone they know.
“Early reporting will allow ISD and its partners to help the individual in a timely manner and prevent the person from harming himself/herself and others,” added MHA.
An intruder attacked the Ulu Tiram police station on May 17, 2024, resulting in the death of two policemen and injuring another.
Seven individuals were detained by Malaysian authorities following an attack on the outskirts of Johor Bahru last Friday.
The seven suspects arrested by the police in the Ulu Tiram police station attack are all locals, and they were brought to court this morning for remand applications by the police, reported Bernama yesterday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain claimed that all seven suspects arrested by the police after the incident are locals, aged between 19 and 62, with none of them being Singaporeans.
