Who would be contesting in Sungai Bakap?

With PKR and Pas set to battle it out in Sungai Bakap, the next focus would be the candidates.

Who are going to contest for their respective parties and coalitions? Media reported that PKR has five names shortlisted.

The latest name under the spotlight for PKR is the current director of Institut Aminuddin Baki (northern branch) Dr Joohari Ariffin, 60.

“Joohari is a highly respected figure not only in Sungai Bakap but also in Nibong Tebal. He is active in charity work and a former teacher. Practically everyone here knows him,” said a PKR insider, the Star reported.

It is learnt that Joohari used to work closely with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who is the Nibong Tebal MP, on her party and parliamentary responsibilities.

Penang PKR Wanita chief Nurhidayah Che Rose is also on the list.

She was defeated by Pas’ Nor Zamri Latiff by a 1,563 vote majority during the state polls last year.

A by-election will be called in Sungai Bakap following Zamri’s death last month.

The third name in the shortlist is Nibong Tebal PKR division chief Datuk Amar Pritpal Abdullah who is a former Sungai Bakap assemblyman.

Opposition protem party, Urimai is backing Amar Pritpal.

Ultimately party president, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would have the final say on who would be contesting Sungai Bakap.

Pas also claims to have some candidates.

Zamri’s wife, Musalmah Yusop, 55 is seen as the best candidate. She runs a bakery shop in Nibong Tebal.
