Mule accounts: Government to amend Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code

Amendments would be made to the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code to criminalise the use of mule accounts for online scams.

“It is not an offence under current legal provisions to have mule accounts.

“That is why the government is considering amendments to the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code to curb online scams that use mule accounts,” said Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Azalina Othman Said.

“The amendments would criminalise the act of allowing one’s bank accounts to be used by others without proper process.

“The amendments would be tabled in this session after obtaining cabinet approval,” she said during Minister’s Question Time in Dewan Rakyat to RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong).

Rayer had asked about the lawmaking status of mule account related offences.
