KK Mart founder relieved “Allah” socks controversy is over

KK Mart Group founder and CEO Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan is relieved that the court discharged and acquitted him over the charge of offending the religious sentiments of Muslims due to the controversial “Allah” socks as the last four months have been difficult for him, his wife Datin Seri Loh Siew Mui and their company.

“We suffered in the past 124 days. It was not an easy journey, and I feel so sad about what happened to my company.

“It was something unthinkable for me, and it would be unforgettable.

“This is an important day for me. I am extremely relieved. None of you have suffered what I did,” he said after court proceedings, reported NST.

Chai and Loh were discharged and acquitted from the charges.

Defence counsel Datuk Rajpal Singh confirmed that the Attorney General’s Chambers accepted the representation of his clients.

“We informed the A-GC that the company needed to be responsible and not the directors.

“The directors were not there when it happened at one of their more than 800 outlets.

“So they (A-GC) agreed that the company needed to take responsibility.

“The company has done so by pleading guilty through a representative, was convicted, fined RM60,000, and the matter ends today.

“I hope this will put an end to the KK Mart saga, and the public will move on,” he said.

Co-defence counsel Datuk David Gurupatham said his clients heeded the judge’s advice to ensure higher quality control.

He also informed the media that KK Mart’s civil suit against Xin Jian Chang, the supplier is at the case management stage.

Earlier KK Mart Supermart and Store and Xin Jian Chang was fined RM60,000 was fined RM60,000 each.
