What’s the need for a debate over faith practices?
So a veteran MP and a controversial converted preacher wants to debate on matters of faith practices.
The following are several reasons why it would be a futile stunt.
First of, faith is something personal that needs to be practiced so that one can be closer to God.
Policies should be debated instead of faith. Why? Policies determine the well being of the society now and in the future.
Second, the notion of comparative faith studies conducted by certain groups of people who are not from the academia is about looking at the superiority of one faith in comparison to the other.
Religious and cultural festivals in Malaysia are more synonymous for the variety of food that one can get during the festivals instead of significance of the festivals.
In some cases the adherents of one’s faith also may not know the religious significance of festival. That’s the third reason.
Fourth, is the personalities involved in this debate. One is a well known politician. While one may not know the level of his understanding of his faith, the perception on the ground is he would politicise it for the benefit of his party.
The other participant is well known to make disparaging remarks the faiths that he do not profess.
Hence, this is why the debate is a futile stunt.
