OSH director suspended, UPM says sorry over dog killing

Universiti Putra Malaysia that has been mired in controversy over dog killing operations in December last year and January this year has suspended Associate Professor Dr Ng Yee Guan who is UPM’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management Office Director until the ongoing probe is completed.

In addition to that, it has apologised for the ill-manner in which wild dogs were managed in December.

The sole agriculture public university have entrusted the police and Department of Veterinary Services to conduct a thorough investigation.

“UPM is committed in extending its full cooperation to the authorities as long as the investigation is done,” the university said in a statement.

UPM also has postponed all wildlife management activities on campus until a wholesome standard operating procedure is developed.

The SOP would put emphasis on balancing between human safety, animal welfare and adherence to the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

In addition, UPM also would holding engagement sessions with stakeholders to develop best practices sustainable procedures.

The shooting of wild dogs are currently investigated by Serdang police.

UPM’s turn around came after environment NGO Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam (Peka) along with animal rights groups held a protest near UPM on Oct 12.

Peka first took UPM to task for the dog killing ops along with a private company PSH Care Services on Oct 3.

They also had called out on Dr Ng.
