Establish the first Tamil secondary school, Penang
Penang backbencher Kumaran Krishnan (PH-Bagan Dalam) has called upon the state government to establish the first Tamil secondary school.
“I would like to propose to the state government to make an official application to the Ministry of Education (MoE) for the approval of the first Tamil secondary school policy.
“Penang Education Department, Seberang Perai City Council and Penang Tamil Primary School Tamil Special Committee can provide a feasibility study.
“The state government can initiate negotiations with the MoE regarding the modules, administrative structure and infrastructure needs,” he said while debating the state budget.
The assemblyman said that the establishment of a Tamil secondary school is no longer an aspiration but a dire need to ensure equal access for a wholesome education for the Tamil students.
He pointed out that Penang is among the states that had the largest number of Tamil primary schools with over 28 operating in the state.
Thus he said that Penang is in the best position to establish the first Tamil secondary school in Malaysia due to four factors.
One, stable and significant Tamil student population.
Two, progressive state education system
Three, a state government that is committed towards consistent vernacular education.
Four, existing structural support via the Penang Tamil Primary Schools Special Committee that oversees the development of Tamil education.
Kumaran also said that his constituency has land plots allocated for the development of a Tamil school which can be used a pioneer project to have SMT Bagan Dalam.
